I may be the only woman who still doesn’t see the necessity of wearing underwear that matches your bra.
Call it an unwillingness to change, call it plain, old school naiveté. Either way, I am still struggling with this seventeen years after getting married and twenty years after turning eighteen.
When I was growing up, whether it be from the formerly tame television I watched or the books I read, I was lulled into the understanding that undergarments needed to be of industrial strength and matching in every way. Every day.
I even was warned what would happen if I was ever caught unaware with a mismatched set. What would people think? I would look like I was not shown the proper ways of a woman by the Head Mother in Charge!
I wanted other women to weigh in on the matchy-match debate. Do they? Don’t they? Well, it turns out that I am in the minority.
Surprisingly, most of my friends make a valiant attempt at matching. And while others said it depends on what they are wearing, adding that matching colors and tones was much easier than matching fabrics and colors, the rest expressed a desire for time to even contemplate such a decision in the course of their hectic day.
While the wisdom that dark bottoms need nude or dark underwear and lighter or more sheer tops need a nude or color matching bra seemed like common sense to me, as we know common sense is not always so common.
