Confessions Of A Curvy Girl: Burn Baby Burn

Confessions Of A Curvy Girl
Do you know what you do not want to hear your eleven year old son ask you when he gets in the car after a long day at school? Go ahead – let your mind wander. He is in fifth grade so the options for this inquiry are limitless.

Son: Mom? Why do women burn their bras when they are protesting something?
Me: What do you mean? What did you talk about at school today? Who did you sit by at lunch?
Son: I heard that when a woman gets mad she burns her bras in protest. Do you burn yours in the firepit?
Me: What do you want for dinner?

I don’t know what was worse – that my son said bra four times in 30 seconds or that he thinks women do this when angry. I could only imagine the images in his head when he heard this juicy bit of trivia at school that day. Man, how things have changed?

When I got home I poked around on the internet a bit. Try doing a search using the words “burn bra.” You get some interesting results. From demonstrations protesting the Miss America Pageant to the Vietnam War, women’s liberation to draft dodging- there is a period of time in history where that seemed to be the go-to display of anger for large groups of women.

I find this interesting. I wonder if the significance of this goes back to the phrase that was coined so long ago calling a bra an ‘instrument of female torture.’ Possibly. But this in-depth research my son wanted to do will have to be postponed until a later date.

Maybe after college.

In 2 minutes I found 10 bras on HerRoom.com that are not burn-worthy. Find your 10 HERE.
