Confessions Of A Curvy Girl: Caring For Your Breasts

Confessions Of A Curvy Girl
I’m not going to name names, but a certain skincare company recently released a new commercial that not only made me laugh out loud, but also really hit a nerve. This commercial is about the skin under your arms — AKA “The Armpit”.

It alluded to the fact that many of us, myself included, neglect to care for this delicate area of skin. I believe it. We shave it, spread chemical-laced deodorant on it and, when it’s warm, that area is a hot bed of germs.

What I would love to see is more dialogue about caring for breast tissue. Perhaps ways to care for it externally, both pre and postpartum and as we age. If you are one to bare a bit of décolletage from time to time, or you like a smooth look around your inner arms when wearing your favorite flirty sundress, then you need to care for that skin.

In addition to avoiding high amounts of caffeine, you should also consume a high amount of fruits, veggies and lean protein. I think that is something your whole body can benefit from. If you have recently started lactating or given birth, additional water is key in keeping your skin hydrated and more elastic.

One pitfall of nursing (not nursing per se, but the sudden onset of ‘interactions’ with the nipples) is chafed nipples. What I used to do, what worked for me, was to use all-cotton nursing pads and bras. Also, let your nipples air dry and avoid harsh or drying soaps in the shower or bath. Even an over the counter lanolin based cream or lotion between feedings can help soothe cracked skin around the nipple.

As I get older, I have started using my facial cream in and around the tissue between my breasts. You know, because no matter how big your breasts are you are going to show signs of aging there as well. These are easy tips on how to take care of this tender and thin skinned area.

HerRoom has some great products to help with nipple care. These range from protecting this soft skin to giving you a more flawless look.
