Confessions Of A Curvy Girl: Oh Kim…

confessions of a curvy girl
Do you know how I heard about Kim’s derriere all shellacked up for the world to see? My youngest son. There were girls looking at her Instagram feed on the bus and he overheard them. He is eleven and the girls might be sixteen. His attention was piqued when he heard one of them say loudly: I wish my %&$ looked like hers.

So we had to have a whole conversation about respect, body image and the media. Again. It seems like we have had to do a lot of that lately. But his question that had me stumped was this: Mom, who IS she anyway? An actress? How does everyone know her?

Good question.

After he started his homework, I ,of course, had to Google her and see what he was talking about. It didn’t take me long to see her shiny (why so shiny?) figure and the well-balanced champagne glass photos. I clicked through and read the entire Paper Magazine article and the first line jumped out at me.

“If you know nothing else about Kim Kardashian, you know that she is very, very famous. Some would say that’s all you need to know.”

So this is what I told my son. His response—but WHY is she famous? When I can’t even eloquently explain why to my son, then this is a real problem. Because why in the hell is she even in our stream of consciousness? Why does she get our attention? For women—is it because we secretly envy her unlimited bankroll and fantastic hair? For men—do you secretly wish your special lady had just a fraction of Kim’s ‘assets’? I don’t get it.

This is not my age speaking here. Yhis is me as an independent woman, a mother of two sons and an entrepreneur. I am also very active on social media and I can see how easily something blows up in a mere 140 characters.

The writer who interviewed Kim for this article asked her if she would exist without social media. Her response—I don’t think so.

There it is in a nutshell.
